But this is the first memoir I've read. There is a difference. Memoirs are not historical timelines. They are recollections of memories. Something the author acknowledges is prone to change, to become something easier to accept, to polish over pain. But in this case Ms. Yuknavitch flows along with most of the difficulties in her life. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
First I need to express why I haven't read memoirs in the past. Because I think they're going to be winnie stories designed to get sympathy. This book doesn't do that. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Ms. Yuknavitch looks back on her life and freely admits her love of drugs, sex, and explores her own short comings of realization. As an example, late in the book she goes back to the moment when her father was teaching her to ride a bike. She by her own decision lets go of the handle bars and crashes. </div>
<div>
This book has a non-critical review by Chuck Palahniuk, author of <i style="font-weight: bold;"><a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0393327345/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0393327345&linkCode=as2&tag=artemisjjones.blogspot.com-20&linkId=951ae89377e5ad0a6a2582e3759178bc" target="_blank">Fight Club: A Novel</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="//ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=artemisjjones.blogspot.com-20&l=am2&o=1&a=0393327345" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /></i>Mr. Palahniuk praises the book. Most of the reviews are by women, so it's possible that only a few men have read this book. And that is something I like to comment on further. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I was able to bond with this book for two reasons. First we both had fathers who served in Korea, both were angry men. Second, a shared love of water. These two reasons transcende gender, race and political lines, they are simple ways to connect, personally. So it's possible to draw emotions in similar circles even with people that you would normally walk away from. That bond made me like this book. I also like her thoughts on reading and writing. So there were other smaller connections that formed with the memories that bond throughout the book. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Although I rate this book as five full sails, it doesn't mean I didn't have an issue with this memoir. I felt in talking about her father, she at times eludes to possible sexual abuse either towards her older sister or herself. But she never goes into a full accusation. If your thinking, details like that are to painful, you're right. But it's a memoir, a book that is designed to heal. If it happened, there should be away to walk through that kind of pain, reveal it openly, then walk, or swim towards a moment of healing. By the time I was done, I felt she omitted something. But only on the subject of abuse with her father. By omission, the reader brings their own thoughts and every reader will inject a different interpretation. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Overall <b><i><a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0979018838/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0979018838&linkCode=as2&tag=artemisjjones.blogspot.com-20&linkId=e2cff28a09cbd008dba9dac0ee0edbd3" target="_blank">The Chronology of Water: A Memoir</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="//ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=artemisjjones.blogspot.com-20&l=am2&o=1&a=0979018838" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /></i></b> is well written (Lidia has her own unique style) and well conveyed through honesty, acceptance, and personal realization of one's self. </div>

<div>
Tobias is a past winner of the South Carolina fiction project. He spent his working life in the coastal areas of South Carolina as a commercial fisherman, that included, clam cultivation, shark fishing, crabbing, and shrimping. </div>

He is semi-retired in Vero Beach Fl. </div>

About The Book </h4>
<div>
I read the paperback version which is two-hundred-sixteen pages. <i><b><a target="_blank" href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LQQT5WA/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B01LQQT5WA&linkCode=as2&tag=artemisjjones.blogspot.com-20&linkId=7a84d490b98e8b93455c441ab2fecc22">What If Only</a><img src="//ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=artemisjjones.blogspot.com-20&l=am2&o=1&a=B01LQQT5WA" width="1" height="1" border="0" alt="" style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" /> is a</b></i> collection made up of thirty-two short stories with a varied cast of characters young, old and middle aged. It would not be correct to say that these characters are experiencing everything that most of us feel and go through in our lives, but the reader will feel commonality in some cases. The exception is how Tobias gets inside his characters heads, and while your following the situation-you the reader-are understanding things the characters cannot grasp. You'll empathize with some, shake your head at others, and in the case of the title story, What If Only, you can sense the regret. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<h4 style="text-align: left;">
Question For The Author</h4>
<div>
What is your best fish story? He told me, "commercial fisherman don't have <i>fish storie</i>s." I pressed on, because I find that hard to believe. He said read, Blood Work, in the book. The story recounts catching a shark. </div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
This book is based on true
events that occurred in West Palm Beach Florida, starting in the mid 1970’s. Written in a style that reminds the reader
of an old detective novel, with characters whose names seem to jump right out
of early genre, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1941859119/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1941859119&linkCode=as2&tag=youadugueblo-20&linkId=34DBJ7V564UXBLDZ">Murder in Palm Beach</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="https://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=youadugueblo-20&l=as2&o=1&a=1941859119" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" />
, is a true detective story with a strong
emotional twist. Three distinct worlds collide, the life of a well-connected wealthy
restaurateur, the local legal authorities, and a brawler named Mitt
Hecher. Mitt is disliked by the local
police, because he is in constant trouble. He is a barroom brawler with karate
skills. Rodger Kriger the restaurant owner
is wealthy, has a family, and a girlfriend on the side. Rodger also has a big
mouth, and that is the impetus of the plot around his murder. The local authorities
end up with a prominent citizen murdered and no solid leads during an election
year, so someone has to take the fall for murder. The assistant DA John Scarponia has failed
before to put Mitt Hecher away, but now he sees an opportunity. Will justice prevail? <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<div class="MsoNormal">
This story is engaging from the start, for several reasons. It has a strong emotional draw, you really get attached to the thug Mitt
Hecher. Mitts character evolves as he falls in love, gets married, becomes a father. This book will stir the curiosity of any reader to search
Google a few times—even if you’re not
a Florida resident—because of the accusations that are made by the characters
and the references to national political powers. Mitts life is in turmoil for several years, his wife develops an illness and he manages to survive in prison and becomes well liked by other prisoners and guards. He uses his skills as a fighter to teach other inmates self defense. His actions in turn get noticed by the guards and warden in a positive light. I never guessed the ending—it
was not expected. The next time I drive over the Sunshine Sky-way bridge, I'll think about how this book ended. <o:p></o:p></div>

fifteen books including—<i>A Rumor of War</i>—a
classic memoir of his time as a Marine in the Vietnam war. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Artemis: What books influenced
you as a teen and young adult? <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Bob: Probably the one that most
impressed me was <i>The Great Gatsby, </i>for
its flowing eloquence. I once had the last page memorized. Also, <i>Salinger’s
Catcher in the Rye </i>had me staying up late a couple of nights, and I was
enthralled by <i>Dostoevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov </i>and <i>Crime and Punishment, </i>which was a lot easier to get through. <o:p></o:p></div>

I would recommend this book to young girls between twelve and sixteen. <br />
After reading the reviews on GoodReads it seems she has a slightly broader audience than just teenage girls. I stand by my recommendation because I feel that is her n<i>iche</i>.<br />
<br />
<h4 style="text-align: left;">
Let's sample, <i>The Crystal Girl.</i></h4>
<div>
From the book:<i> The sun reflected over the beach sand on this late spring afternoon, while Clare was walking over the sand, holding a crystal in her hands.</i></div>
<div>
<i>Blonde hair, brown eyes, pale skin. </i></div>
<div>
<i><br /></i></div>
<div>
That excerpt from the story is the opening paragraph of The Crystal Girl. My daughter read it and immediately created a scene in her mind with her fertile imagination. As an adult reader, I wanted more description of the scene. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Harables is an inspiring, blossoming book for a young mind. It tackles subjects that many teens face like being transferred to <i style="font-weight: bold;">The New School. </i>Another story that responds to the imaginative young reader. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This book has the voice of spirited youth, enjoy. </div>

Right from the beginning you know what has happened. Mr Cruz is dying. What Fuentes builds through a change of voice is a character devolving under his own consciousness and actions taken throughout his life. </div>

Carlos Fuentes, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carlos_Fuentes" target="_blank">Wikipedia Biography</a> was heavily influenced by the movie Citizen Kane, which he first viewed at the age of ten and acknowledged, in interviews, that he saw the movie several times throughout his life, leaving an indelible impression on him as a person and as a writer. The parallels of Artemio Cruz and Citizen Kane are clear.<br />

He faces challenges of conscious, deals with loss of honor and hope for redemption and homesickness. He does this while traveling with his new friends and co-workers. To Whitey, the circus manager, Robert is someone to take in and mold for bigger things. To Randy, Robert is a friend. From Archie, Robert must try to defend himself, and his love for Archie's sister, Anna.<br />
Anna, who captures Roberts heart, is a guitar swingin show stopping country singing girl who befriends Robert and gives him a more relaxed nickname. <br />
<br />
Through their travels together, Robert wants something, he needs to resolve a issue from his childhood, and his journey to get that resolution takes him through farm towns, small towns, the folk scene in Greenwich Village NYC, and finally back to where everything started.<br />

This non-fiction work captures a time many people would hope to put behind them in the City of Juarez Mexico. The timeline of this book goes into the recent past, and unfortunately is still relevant today.A city ravaged by gang wars, extortion, kidnapping, and mixed with the hope of its citizens to rise above the current state of mind and madness, to become something greater, to believe in not only a higher power, but an on going higher purpose for those who live each and every day to its fullest.<br />

The author, Robert Andrew Powell, a sports journalist, has taken on a menacing and frightening subject. Soccer in the midst of a narco-terror state.<br />
<br />
Mr. Powell, mainly follows the life of Marco Vidal, a young jugador (player)with the Indios futbol team in Juarez Mexico. Marco, an excellent athlete, talented, un appreciated, who faces a constant struggle to prove himself to the many couches he needs to work with. The team, Indios, owned by the Ibarra family is also followed along with the changes in coaching staff, El Kartel, a fan club, and numerous other people who have interest or involvement with the team. The main struggle of the team is to stay in Primera, which is the top league in Mexican Soccer. You will follow the team every step of the way in their struggle to remain viable and relevant in their city, and to stay alive. <br />
I'd like to especially note the chapter near the end about the dead women of Juarez. Mr Powell also did a separte investigative peice on the subject and his research brings clarity to urban myth's surrounding this on going tragedy. I'd also like to note the last few chapters in the book, as his time is coming to an end. The author takes us through his personal changes of acceptance of violence and what that means to all of us as human beings. Thought provoking. <br />

<div>
<h3 style="text-align: left;">
In my continuing effort to find excellent relevant books on the cheap. I bring you Bullfighting. </h3>
</div>
<div>
Bullfighting is a collection of short stories, one of the stories is titled Bullfighting, and throughout this collection of shorts is a recurring theme. All the stories deal with men who are going through various stages of loss of something, something that made them who they are. It could be grief, loss of virility, or loss of a loved one.<br />
<br />
I enjoyed <b><i><a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/067002287X/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=067002287X&linkCode=as2&tag=artemisjjones.blogspot.com-20&linkId=17904567e6c2a424fd7f0ca8a06505ad" target="_blank">Bullfighting: Stories</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="//ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=artemisjjones.blogspot.com-20&l=am2&o=1&a=067002287X" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /></i></b> the best, because it deviates slightly from the rest of the book. Donal, the main character has a good life, no complaints, has rounds of pints with his chums. He has a government job, with little risk. And that is what is missing from his life, so at a moment, he takes a risk, a big risk and the consequences could be fatal.<br />
<br />
Sleep was my second favorite story. It's a husbands appreciate of his wife after many years of marriage and raising a family. Doyles style is Irish all the way, his verbal imagery would take any Bostonian back to hearing the voices of long lost grandparents from another time.<br />
This book is not a #YA read, but it would make a great gift for any father out there who's raised a family.<br />
<br />

<br />
I can only imagine that if an author wrote a query letter to a publisher today and it stated that, "I'm going to tell a story, but I'll be captured by aliens, and I'll fictionalize my name but not all of my life. I'll throw in bits of interest, but mainly I'm still dealing with PTSD and I need to get it out of me. Will you publish it?" What do think the answer would be?<br />
<br />
Billy Pilgrim is the central character of Slaughter House Five. Billy gets captured early on by the Germans in this recounting of not only Billy's experience in the war, but also his personal, and extra-terrestrial life as well. His recollection ties three fates, the war, his marriage, his time as a guest on Tralfalmadore.<br />

He meets up with two american scouts, and another enlisted soldier, Roland Weary,who insists on mocking and bullying Billy. The Scouts abandon Billy and the bully. The scouts get caught and shot. Billy and the bully are left to fend for themselves. They eventually get captured. At this point through trains, unpleasant at best, that transfer them to prison camps, Billy and the bully, rest. The bully doesn't make it. And Billy goes on to a prison camp that houses a meat packing facility three floors below ground level. During the bombing, Billy and other prisoners are three floors down in Slaughter House number five, in a refrigerator. Captors, and captee's survive together. When they emerge after the bombing stops, they all fend for themselves through a city in ruins. Vivid descriptions abound, taking you through scene after scene. SH5, doesn't end with closure for the characters, some die, some live in shock. It is up to you as the reader to develop your opinion of war, its costs, both mentally and physically, to the human spirit.<br />

Kurt Vonnegut, in my youth, was our counter culture, war is hell, let's not romance it, go to guy. Vonnegut felt he had to write about the misalignment of humanity. It's failings. It's traps. And he did it with odd human behavior, dead-pan humor, and an inner voice that pushed him onward, from his experience, with the pen. </div>

Mr. Joyce creates a large cast of characters, great dialog- he's really a master at this- and tension that slowly works it's way through one particular character, Gabriel Conroy. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In, <i style="font-weight: bold;"><a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008RCMSF8/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B008RCMSF8&linkCode=as2&tag=artemisjjones.blogspot.com-20&linkId=ba5c6fadb0c5806836e3561ba1826c7d" target="_blank">The Dead</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="//ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=artemisjjones.blogspot.com-20&l=am2&o=1&a=B008RCMSF8" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /> </i>Mr. Joyce's characters notice everything about each other, simple smiles, quaint frowns, and you sense this as the voyeur, while the conversations go from serious to whimsical with ease. It's easy to place yourself in the dancing room or at the dinner table during the evening party with this cast of piano instructors, uncles who tip the bottle, proper cousins, jealous women, spinster aunts, and maids with harbored tension.<br />
About half-way through, Mr. Conroy makes a speech, that considering the timeline of the story, from early 1900's, could easily be made today. Here's a quote from that speech. "A new generation is growing up in our midst, a generation actuated by new ideas and new principles. It is serious and enthusiastic for these new ideas and its enthusiasm, even when it is mis-directed, is, I believe, in the main sincere."<br />
Later in the speech, Mr. Conroy takes a soft somber tone, but his words are relevant and timely once again. "Our path through life is strewn with many such sad memories: and were we to brood upon them always we could not find the heart to go bravely with our work among the living."<br />
<br />
As you read, <i style="font-weight: bold;">The Dead, </i>a thought enters your mind concerning the title. The story is very lively, not morbid as the title suggests, But it gets deep into your thoughts and soul as you travel to a hotel with Greta and Gabriel after the party is over. The sexual tension. A passage from the story. "He longed to cry to her from his soul, to crush her body against his, to overmaster her." Gabriel's ill-timed thoughts, and inaction terrorize his emotions that become fueled by jealousy. <br />
In the end he makes conclusions that I feel would ultimately help him go on with his life. You can decide. For Greta, there's a release of deeply held emotions that get triggered early in the evening at the party by a song. And the song brings back a flood of memories that she remains quiet and subdued, until she recounts the story of her first love.<br />
Enjoy!<br />

Alma, who is a maid for a prominent family in West Table Missouri is privy to much, but also consumed by the loss of her beloved sister, Ruby, and her own speculation. Is she right? You decide? </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Mr. Woodrell's creation of a grandson to tell this story gives the reader the linkage needed to carry it through a time line that spans half a century. The story starts in 1929, and moves through several characters of various sorts. A preacher who decries the scandalous behavior in the local dance hall. Gypsies, disliked disdained, dishonored in the minds of good towns folk, a citizen with a criminal past, and a Prominent citizen. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The big question is. Who is responsible? Responsible for a fire so ravenous, so intense, so destructive that it kills forty-two of the locals in a blast that defies explanation. Of course there's an investigation, but no concrete answers come quickly and hearts and minds burn with anger over the lost loved ones. </div>

I read this book as hardbound and I've placed it on my bookshelf among my favorites, and books to share with friends. </div>

with <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Newspeak </i>the newest form of

combined words have less broadly defined meanings. The powers behind big

I have re-read this book five times. As a cancer patient who is currently in remission for two years, this has been my go to book for understanding a disease and making a human connection with the disease itself. As the author writes" Cancer is a distorted version of ourselves." </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
If you are caring for someone who has this disease or are going through it yourself, this is the book the explains what cancer <i style="font-weight: bold;">is </i>and ties it with a brilliantly written narrative that intertwines a doctor with each patient. As you read through Carla's story with leukemia, the author entwines the history of uncovering this illness with past and present patients. He explores that mysticism that ancient doctors used to describe something that was unable to be understood in earlier times. But they now know what Cancer <i style="font-weight: bold;">is</i>, and as the author carefully advises we are only at the beginning of understanding this disease.<br />

<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">What I like
about Mr.Woodrell's talents is his consistent and exacting use of local
vernacular. He doesn’t miss any details
in tone, inflection, and behavior in any of his characters. What I like about
his stories in general is that they are written to how he wants to tell the
story. Let me explain. I recently read a
short story compilation that was edited by George R R Martin. The stories were
all five-thousand words in length, a standard word count requested by editors
and used by authors to sell their work. I never reviewed that book because it
was a terrible collection. But </span><span style="line-height: 18.4px;">Mr. Woodrell</span><span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"> doesn’t put himself in that
mold. If a story is twelve hundred words, he doesn’t fluff it up.
His writing is precise, consistent with characters, and his story lines eb and
flow as needed to convey the scene or temperament of the characters. This collection contains short stories of various
lengths, all were interesting and enjoyable.
Not a surprise that the author of Winters Bone could also produce a
great collection of short stories. If
you enjoy reading about intriguing characters, that represent the best and
worst of humanity, you will enjoy this book.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">I’ll start
with the first thought, well really a question, which I had after I finished
reading this wonderfully written memoir.
How can we ever fully understand what other people have gone through? The
answer of course is-we can’t. That’s why we read memoirs, to learn about another
person’s life. To, maybe, understand the human experience better. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">I love it
when I find a book like this. A book that the publisher has moved on from, as
far as promotion is concerned and the author has moved onto another project as
well. It’s up to the rest of us to keep the story alive. It’s still available. This isn’t the first book that I’ve read
written by a former soldier, it’s the second. The first one was <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0312602960/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0312602960&linkCode=as2&tag=artemisjjones.blogspot.com-20&linkId=3X22UPVEJJ27GKML" rel="nofollow">Soft Spots</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="https://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=artemisjjones.blogspot.com-20&l=as2&o=1&a=0312602960" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" />
, which
I also recommend. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;"> Mr Castner starts at the beginning with a
memory of friends, then takes us into the world of an EOD technician. EOD, Explosives Ordinance
Disposal, is not everyone’s first choice in life, but it’s what the author
chose. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"> You will be with him, as an </span><span style="line-height: 18.4px;">insubordinate</span><span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"> officer, as a tech at night on a bridge defusing a bomb while being shot at,
and a husband who becomes distant from his family. You feel the first steps at
trying to recapture a mind lost to </span><span style="line-height: 18.4px;">shock-wave</span><span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"> after </span><span style="line-height: 18.4px;">shock-wave</span><span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"> from explosions. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Memoirs
written by soldiers are among the most important books for us to read, as we-as
a nation-move on from the war. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">A soldier’s
memoir is important because it can shape us. It’s not acceptable to be ignorant
of a life that accepted a command to fight or defend. Reading a soldier’s story
is not commending or condoning, it’s taking the steps to understand. As a reader
you become better informed about decisions our politicians make that ultimately
have an effect on all our lives. Our
lives are affected when they come home. Can they handle it? Are they safe? Are
we safe being around them? Can we help them?
All of these questions enter the public arena and require understanding.
Reading-The Long Walk, will get you closer to being in another person’s
footsteps, as they struggle on a sand hill, work a thirty-six hour EOD call and
then rest for one hour before going back on another call. To see through their eyes: losing a friend, a brother
in arms, and their mind. Walking with them, step by step, in the supermarket
with a sense of readiness to pull the trigger on their weapon—tense; wound-up,
wound-down, judgment lost, but not forgotten. Then judgement regained, slowly
in Yoga Class, slowly pushing the mind to work correctly, though much slower,
back to a place of understanding oneself, and struggling to understand their new
reality. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

Stanley's Hastings character is spot on in every detail. You can imagine this guy in your mind, and be in his moments, such as when he spots a sexy young woman on a plane, or when he's on the case, but wryly seeming off the case. The detective Mr. Hastings, is a very clever character. </div>

<b>Safari</b> is just that, a middle aged couple seeking some adventure in their lives, takes a trip to Africa, Stanley's wife Alice is thrifty, so she books a cut rate adventure. Alice also tries to upgrade their status without paying extra, which provides some humorous thoughts and comments from Stanley. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Someone from the tour group or guides has a secret, and it is imperative that no-one finds out what that secret is. As you follow the tourists and have breakfast with them, dine with them, and share their concerns while you're immersed in the story through Stanley's point of view, you'll wonder who is the culprit of a crime. But you'll be wrong. That is where Mr. Hall's strength as an author comes in, he'll take you write up too the last pages, before you know who created the <b><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1605986372/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1605986372&linkCode=as2&tag=artemisjjones.blogspot.com-20&linkId=FEHWW7GT7Y2SUFQZ" rel="nofollow">Safari</a><img alt="" border="0" src="http://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=artemisjjones.blogspot.com-20&l=as2&o=1&a=1605986372" height="1" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" />

is a
thriller set primarily in the Boston area of the United States during the year
2032. It’s leading character is Cole Fitzgerald an emergency room physician who
works at Massachusetts General Hospital. Tension starts almost immediately as
Cole is trying to take his family out of United States and immigrate to the
United Kingdom.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">The United States has become a nation in a second
civil war, this war is not over race, but primarily over a tiny device that
traps people in tragic lives. Almost everyone has been injected with a MedID
chip. If their MedID chip indicates they have an insufficient score to
participate in productive society, their lives become chaotic and difficult.
Add in the religious views of citizens, national security, politicians,
billionaires, and law enforcement all taking different sides and you have a
setting for a great deal of tension. </span><br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>There were a
couple of moments late in the book where I saw or felt the characters would
have different responses: Reverend Mitchell is talking to his primary
supporters and accomplices via deeply encrypted video chat. A billionaire is
among them, and there is brief moment when I had re-read the exchange for
clarity. Still later, I also saw Cole, the Ivy League trained doctor as having
enough sense to understand a situation he enters where a person he knows and
recognizes is working under cover. Neither of these brief moments weakened the
story line. </span></div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">The descriptions of the areas, the authors insight
with regards to human behavior and emotion, is excellent. The use of the
settings to create backdrops for scenes of rising tension is also on par with
any well known authors—of thrillers—in our modern times. </span></div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">As the book draws to a conclusion, several moments
come together with a mix of desperation, strength, and nerve that keep a reader
engaged in the story right to the end. This is a good vacation read or the perfect read for that rainy weekend.</span></div>

throughout the city and that just walking the streets of Beacon Hill or through
the Boston Common, it could just as easily be during either past or future
revolutions. In addition, the planes that departed Logan Airport on 9/11
and the Boston Marathon bombing brought everything so much to the forefront for

<br />
This is a story of a young girl of Russian-Jewish heritage Mila, who came to
New York in search of true love and the American Dream. But after struggling to
survive and keep a roof above her head, she turns to an option that she never
even considered before: she becomes an exotic dancer. On her way she meets a
lot of people, both good and bad, and she depicts every single one of them with
incredible honesty. She falls in love with the owner of the club, the powerful
Italian-American mobster R., and now they both have to fight for their bright
future together.<br />
This is the story of love and hatred, of friendship and betrayal, and
everything else that takes place behind the closed doors of a gentleman's club.<br />

<br />
Artemis: What books are on your nightstand right now? <br />
Ellie: Right now I’m mainly reading biographies of Brooklyn mobsters from the
70-90 era. <i>The Butcher of Bensonhurst, "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0060930969/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0060930969&linkCode=as2&tag=youadugueblo-20&linkId=3YP2SRMQAXO4EPEQ">Underboss: Sammy the Bull Gravano's Story of Life in the Mafia</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="https://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=youadugueblo-20&l=as2&o=1&a=0060930969" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" />
”.</i></span><br />
<span style="color: white; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-style: italic;">Artemis: Peter Mass's book?</span><br />
<span style="color: white; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-style: italic;">Ellie: Yes, and I'm also reading “<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0451406818/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0451406818&linkCode=as2&tag=youadugueblo-20&linkId=RUEEEZQWD6IEVJOA">Gotti: Rise and Fall</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="https://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=youadugueblo-20&l=as2&o=1&a=0451406818" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" />
” – My life has intersected with that world and I need to learn all I can about it. A lot of people find it
quite an interesting choice for a girl to read and to write about, but I guess
my city – New York – inspires me.<br />
<br />
Artemis: Take me into a stripper’s
dressing room?<br />
Ellie: That’s an interesting request. A dressing room plays an important role
just by itself: it’s a place where all those regular girls who you see on the
street every day transform themselves into their alter egos; it’s like a
dressing room in a theatre (looks absolutely the same, with chairs, mirrors and
hangers), it’s just instead of a costume they put on lingerie and high heels
but the amount of the make-up is probably the same as of the professional
actresses. It’s like putting on the mask and act your part out in front of the
viewers, that’s how these girls make their living. Go out there on stage- flirt,tease, play so you can make as much cash as possible. Then go back to the
dressing room, take their make-up off, change into their regular clothes and go
back to their normal life: some go to their law school in the morning, some
deposit more money on their account to open their spa salon next year, and the
funniest part is that most of the customers have no idea that they might meet
the same girl in the daylight wearing business suit and won’t even recognize
her. <br />

<span style="color: white; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-style: italic;">Artemis: If I'm the fly on the wall of the dressing room: what am I hearing?<br />
Ellie: Probably the same girl talk that you would hear near any girls sitting
together: dancers discuss the same issues as all the other girls - their
relationship, school, fashion trends, movies they saw, books they read, resorts
they recently went to… Maybe the only exception would be that at the end of the
night they compare how much money each one made. And no, dancers don’t normally hate each other and you
won’t hear too much of a cat fight in a dressing room, it’s more like a
sorority, there’s always one “bitch” who everybody hates, but mostly girls are
very supportive of each other and become good friends outside the club.<br />

Artemis: Why should I read -<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1500711608/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1500711608&linkCode=as2&tag=youadugueblo-20&linkId=LMTCJRXFS25DHY2A">The New York Doll</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="https://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=youadugueblo-20&l=as2&o=1&a=1500711608" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" />
?<br />
Ellie: <i>The New York Doll</i> is an adult
audience oriented novel, and everyone who’s interested in stories revealing the
truth about certain aspects of life or businesses will enjoy reading it. I like
to compare my book to THE NANNY DIARIES by Nicola Kraus and Emma McLaughlin or
THE TWINS OF TRIBECA by Rachel Pine, but instead of revealing an ugly marriage
and child raising problems of the Upper East Side moms or showing the real face
of the movie-making business, <i>The New York Doll </i>exposes the inner world
of a gentleman’s club business, it tells the story behind each character, both
good and bad, it dwells on the question why the whole industry is so popular
among men and why even the richest brokers of Wall Street who can afford
everything, are complaining about their life and trying to find comfort in the
arms of these beautiful dancers.<br />
First of all, so many books were written on the related topic, but none of them
were written by a non-resident of the United States, and that’s what makes it
really stand out among the competing titles. I wanted to tell a story from an
immigrant’s point of view and to show my readers how hard it is to make it here
if you don’t have any papers. And second, for me the main reason for writing
this book was to make the readers understand the real reasons why even
well-educated girls from good families sometimes find themselves in a
gentleman’s club. Because let’s face it, mostly all the people who I was
talking to prior to writing this book, especially those who have never been
introduced to the night club world, have this stereotype in their head: all
exotic dancers are shameless, uneducated home-wreckers who don’t know any
better than to dance almost naked for money. Well, all those people would be
very surprised if I told them that I personally know so many girls who have to
dance to pay tuition for their higher education. Those are the future doctors
and lawyers, interior designers and fashion journalists for whom dancing is the
only opportunity to pay for their dream career choice. For most of the dancers
a gentleman’s club is only a phase and normally a very short one, then they
move on, get their dream job, get married and have kids and nobody would even
know what they used to do. I wanted to break that stereotype for everybody.<br />
<br />
<br />
Artemis: Is there romance in your book, or just a romantic idea?<br />
Ellie: Yes, my protagonist Mila’s has a romantic
relationship with her boss R. Some guys just come around and break a girl’s
heart, some just use a girl for whatever reason and some girls find their
Knight in the Shining Armor who marry them and they live happily ever after.
You’d be surprised how many couples actually meet and marry after their
dancer-customer relationship. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="Standard">
<span style="color: white; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-style: italic;">
There is even a separate chapter in the book that dwells on the idea why
certain types of men are attracted to certain types of girls and it’s analyzed
from both biological and psychological point of view. A lot of people found it
quite fascinating and told me that they never thought of it from this point of
view. So here’s another eye-opener for the readers.<br />
<br />
Artemis: What book has influenced you the most? <br />
Ellie: I’m an eager reader, and I always find the development of a character
the most interesting, especially when he or she is taken from their normal
environment and has to respond to new circumstances. So a book like <i><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0061122416/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0061122416&linkCode=as2&tag=youadugueblo-20&linkId=L7SD32V2MT7VI4XN">The Alchemist</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="https://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=youadugueblo-20&l=as2&o=1&a=0061122416" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" />
</i> by one of
my favorite authors: Paulo Coelho, really gets my attention. The main character Santiago is his
dream and finds himself in a completely different country, the language of which he
doesn’t even speak. It has influenced me the most, while writing <i><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1500711608/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1500711608&linkCode=as2&tag=youadugueblo-20&linkId=LMTCJRXFS25DHY2A">The New York Doll</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="https://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=youadugueblo-20&l=as2&o=1&a=1500711608" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" />
</i>.
Santiago gets all his money stolen and doesn’t have a place to go. And
nevertheless he doesn’t give up and keeps following his path. And I think a lot
of people find it very inspiring. That’s why I wanted to create a similar
story, with a strong character development that would be appealing to the
readers. The main character Mila wouldn’t survive in New York if she would
remain the person she used to be. She has to evolve, transform herself in order
to fight for her dream and I hope the readers will enjoy following her
transformation.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="color: white; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-style: italic;">Artemis: I agree <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0062024329/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0062024329&linkCode=as2&tag=youadugueblo-20&linkId=UV2N5HQFTRJRSFXJ">The Alchemist: A Graphic Novel</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="https://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=youadugueblo-20&l=as2&o=1&a=0062024329" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" />

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (many of the Sherlock Holmes stories).<span style="font-family: 'arial, sans-serif'; font-size: 9.5pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>

Artemis: Can you tell us a little bit about the plot of
your book? <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="Textbody" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
Rick: Erik Johnson was wronged fifteen years ago and
it changed everything. He’s now back in town and on a mission of
vengeance against those who set him up. He only remembers some of the
details, but he knows enough to realize who ruined his career, his family, his
life and that’s all that matters to him. <br />
Erik provides clues to Bill Ljunglof, a priest haunted
by his own past, and Tami Anderson, a police officer whose greatest fears come
alive in this case. They work together to determine who is giving them
information on prominent people in the community that have died recently, and
how they could be linked together. Meanwhile Erik finds that through
intermittent memories, everything is not what it seems. As Erik pieces together
what actually happened to him all those years ago, he can’t believe the
revelations, nor can Bill or Tami.<span style="font-family: 'arial, sans-serif'; font-size: 9.5pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>

enemies through a crematorium while they’re still alive and buries another
alive. However, he’s really not such a bad guy. He’s personable and
likeable, even leaving hints to a police officer and a priest to uncover the

first, but then feel sorry for him by the end of the story.<span style="font-family: 'arial, sans-serif'; font-size: 9.5pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>

nightmares I could imagine, and put several characters through those
experiences. I also gave the main character a type of amnesia, only revealing
his past a little at a time over the course of the story, culminating in the
climactic ending. From page one, you see how cruel the main character can be,
but as you read, you wonder if he’s really the bad guy in the story.<o:p></o:p></div>
